Why is Daddy crying? is a book full of experiences that can trigger strong emotions, as it deals with sad, but also happy tears. The page where “Daddy” is being chased by a woman with a rolling pin could therefore bring back traumatic memories. The picture of “Daddy” lying on his chaise longue because he “ate too many sweets” can also bring back memories of something else. The death of various people is also addressed. The book offers a child-friendly opportunity to talk to a child about deeply sad situations. The experiences, or rather the assumptions as to why “Daddy” might be crying, are those of the two children, Hamsa and Alvdis. The book invites conversations: Why are YOU sometimes sad? What are YOUR feelings? What have YOU already experienced? The pages in Why is Daddy crying?, where these experiences are presented, could actually trigger, but also, and very importantly, offer children a space to talk openly about THEIR experiences and feelings.
